Don't Discount Grace by Adam Becker

By Adam Becker
I was reminded by someone this week that some people aren't bad people they just made bad choices. I guess I rush to judgment too often. I recently made a bad choice and have seen the need for God's loving grace. I would think that I would be condemned like I have condemned others; instead I have been given grace and love. We must realize when we feel like condemning and judging others that that could be us. We are all capable of making bad choices. I never was that judgmental till a person whose life revolved around illegal drugs tried to ruin my life and did some very bad things to me. I also was the victim of adultery.

As a matter of fact all the people who did mean things to me seemed to be people who slept around and did illegal drugs. So, I really started to hate and judge those kinds of people. When I got back into the church I thought I was away from those people but I found many people in the church like that as well and they did other mean things to me and I had many bad experiences. So I started to think that the majority of people are bad and I judged them. I didn't just think they made a bad choice I really thought at core they were very bad people.

It was hard to develop friendships with people because I was always judging them and they were always trying to find dirt on me. It was a cycle that wasn't productive and wasn't helping anyone. I realize that human nature is selfishness and sin and that everyone is born bad and in sin but we have to try and see the good in people or we walk the line of judgment and hate. There is a saying that rings true that says, "if you look for the bad in people you surely will find it." Some think Lincoln said that but he didn't, in any case it's true. There is bad in everyone but there is also good. The Bible says we are to focus on what is good and think on that. We must try and see the good in people and not judge. Everyone sins and makes mistakes, everyone needs grace.

The Bible says, Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. NASU

Unmerited Favor

Grace is unmerited favor not by works. You don't get it by doing good things or by making right choices. You receive it because we aren't perfect and need it. It is a gift, and we don't just need it when we get saved but every day. Sure, if you're saved there should be a change in your life but you are still going to make mistakes and need grace. Sin is still there in us trying to wage war with us and we sometimes fall into it. Apostle Paul said the following about struggling with sin.

Romans 7:14-23 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. NIV

Paul struggled and messed up and so will you and me. So, grace comes into play. We all make bad choices, again I will say not everyone is a bad person they just made a bad choice. So, before you feel like judging someone, know that could be you. You don't know what they were going through which led them to make that bad choice. You aren't them so don't judge, especially if they are sorry about what they did. Don't let your past experiences with certain people cause you to have a bias like I did. And if you make a mistake, know that there is grace right there for you. Grab hold of it, God still loves you. You are not a bad person you are the righteousness of God.
