Your Sin Doesn't Separate You from God! by Rene Picota

By Rene Picota
When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the LORD God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the LORD God among the trees. Genesis 3:8 I was recently scrolling on my Facebook and I came across a post that was dangerous. The post read, "Sin separates us from God." The post was written by a fellow believer who has a ministry. This post deeply disturbed me because it is simply untrue. At first glance, an average believer may agree. People were commenting "Amen," "Preach," and similar messages. My heart sank deeply. Statements like these are dangerous because God is not afraid of your sin.

What is Sin?

Sin means missing the mark. There are two types of sin. The first is sins of omission. These kinds of sins are sins we commit by not doing something. We neglect doing what God asks us to. For example: failing to pray (1 Samuel 12:23), failing to help other people (James 4:17), failing to provide for our family (1 Timothy 5:8), failing to read the Bible (Psalm 119:11), failing to fellowship with other believers (Hebrews 10:25), and failing to share the Gospel (Mark 16:15).

Sins of commission are doing things we know we shouldn't do. For example: sexual sins, theft, murder, lying, cursing, witchcraft, gossiping, idolatry, getting drunk or high, and so many more (1 Corinthians 6:10, Galatians 5:19-21).

Romans 3:23-24 reminds us, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. When Adam and Eve sinned God still went looking for them. God wasn't surprised by their sins. However, as we read on we can understand that the consequences of sin are very real. I am not being soft of sin. When a brother or sister in the Lord is in sin I do my best to gently restore them (Galatians 6:1-4). When we sin feelings of guilt, condemnation, and regret oftentimes follow. Romans 8:1-2 reminds us that there is no condemnation for those of us who are in Christ Jesus. The law of the Spirit who gives life has set us from the law of sin and death. Jesus' blood washes the filthiest sin away and leaving us whiter than snow!

Jesus did not abolish the law. He fulfilled the Mosaic law and every prophecy concerning Himself. Christ paid the penalty of our sins. Because of His sacrifice we can live victorious lives. That is the beauty of the Gospel:

Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. 1 Corinthians 15:1-5

Sin Based Statements

Sin based statements like "Sin separates you from God" are often used as scare tactics to keep believers and non-believers from sinning. However, because of our sinful nature which we are all born with (Psalm 51:5) we cannot live a sinless life apart from God's grace.

The Bible says that it is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance. What motivates both unbelievers and believers not to sin is God's unconditional love. His love is unconditional. Unconditional means that God has no conditions attached to Him loving you. That is good news! That means no matter the mistakes we make His loves us. He isn't separated from you. He is closer to you than the air you are breathing. Even when you feel far from God He is close to you. His Word says that He is close to the broken hearted. He is the friend that sticks closer than a brother.

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. – Romans 6:1-4

When you encounter His love, you won't want to sin anymore. You fall so in love with Jesus that you would not do anything to hurt His feelings. Grace is not a license to sin. Grace is a license not to sin. Give in to His grace today. It is the only way to live free from the bondage of sin.

Jesus Christ loves you. He didn't come to fix your life. He came to give you a new life. Just as He was raised from the dead you are raised to life if you are in Christ!

Romans 5:20 so powerfully declares, "the law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more" What good news! Whether we are trying to win others to Christ or growing deeper in our spiritual formation let us make a shift in our method of advancing the Gospel: Let's proclaim Him and His unfailing love instead of using fear tactics to manipulate others to praying a prayer they don't understand. The only way is still through Jesus. What you magnify in your life you will attract. If you focus on not sinning, you will find yourself striving for perfection, which you will never attain. If you focus on Jesus, you will find yourself having a love encounter that changes your life.

Isaiah 59:2

Isaiah 59:2 is the verse memorized and quoted, But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. NIV. This article doesn't mention that biggie. It's used along with the 4 Spiritual Laws as one of the tenants of sin evangelism. However, Rene IS right, that verse-- 1. Is very much Old Testament, 2. refers largely to the nation of Israel, no names are named. God was addressing sin at a fundamental level, not dealing with individuals. And the whole issue of sin was dealt with at the cross which brings people to God, and God to people--no more separation.
