The Weight of the World by Chase Butler

By Chase Butler
There are days I wonder how I am having an impact in this world. The vast amount of suffering and pain is almost immobilizing to a heart that cares about it. Where do I even start? It starts right where I am. Many world-changers never grow into their own shoes because the problems they hear about solving are a continent away. When in reality, tragedy lives next-door. There are days I wonder how I am having an impact in this world. The vast amount of suffering and pain is almost immobilizing to a heart that cares about it. Where do I even start?

It starts right where I am at.

There are days I wonder how I am having an impact in this world. The vast amount of suffering and pain is almost immobilizing to a heart that cares about it. Where do I even start?

It starts right where I am at.

Many world-changers never grow into their own shoes because the problems they hear about solving are a continent away. When in reality, tragedy lives next-door.

How can I be present in their suffering? How can I seek solidarity in their life? What resources, time, energy, could I sacrifice for their good?

I have to acknowledge something I've been thinking about as I've thought about my contribution in the world. From what position am I operating? What advantage, power, or privilege have I not merited?

I am a healthy, white, heterosexual, Christian, American male. For all intents and purposes, relative to the rest of the world, I won the genetic, socioeconomic, (fill in the blank with any other category) lottery.

I don't say that in proud arrogance but rather determined humility. What will I do with that? Squander my life on selfish endeavors? Live for the pursuit of riches, pleasure, comfort? Or...

Locking Arms

Use the position, power, and privilege to speak for those who can't, to stand up for the weak, the marginalized, the oppressed. To lock arms with those who are hurting or "different."

I saw a commercial recently about a man walking through life with the weight of the world on his back. He saw the stray dog, the drop-out, the homeless, the war-torn, the hurting. The commercial ends with a quote, "Action lifts the weight of caring."

Just start somewhere. If you don't have a clue where, here's the aim I am making this week:
  • text someone and tell them why you're grateful for them
  • mail someone a card or note
  • speak an encouraging word to your neighbor
  • call someone in your family you haven't spoken to in a while
  • buy someone's meal
  • pray with/for someone
  • give away something you love
  • gift a book that's impacted you
  • ask a stranger about their story
  • give to anyone who asks rather than worrying about how it will be used
Feeling follows action, and the feeling that comes from generosity creates inspiration. It's the kind of inspiration the births vision--vision that creates real progress and moves the world forward.

Just start.
