How to Align Yourself with God's Wisdom by Doug Addison

By Doug Addison
We need God's wisdom more than anything else right now. This ability to perceive things spiritually through the Holy Spirit is called the gift of discernment. The gift of discernment, words of knowledge, discerning of spirits and the gift of wisdom are some of the most underestimated gifts from God. These incredible gifts utilize the senses, power and wisdom of the Holy Spirit and go way beyond our natural abilities. Back when I was seeking God's wisdom for something specific in my life, I went to Proverbs 1 and saw the word "Proverbs" turn into the word "Pro-verbs." I heard the Lord say, "I want you to look at the verbs in Proverbs 1 because I'm going to do something." I found some hidden gems about God's wisdom in the Book of Proverbs that are important in this season.

Back when I was seeking God's wisdom for something specific in my life, I went to Proverbs 1 and saw the word "Proverbs" turn into the word "Pro-verbs." I heard the Lord say, "I want you to look at the verbs in Proverbs 1 because I'm going to do something." Wisdom Listens

For gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight. Proverbs 1:2 NIV

To know wisdom and instruction, you to need to be familiar with God's Word and begin to take note of it throughout your day. You know, most people are not tuned into instructions from God. Most people are used to praying a laundry list, so to speak, and are not slowing down enough to be able to hear the Lord's answers.

God spoke to me a number of years ago that I need to balance out my prayer time with both listening and requesting. Yes! It's okay to bring your requests before the Lord—but also take time and listen.

Wisdom Reveals and Heals Injustice

For receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair. Proverbs 1:3 NIV

We're going through a time right now when God is revealing injustices and calling out things about equality. Gaining God's wisdom requires us to be able to weigh out things and make decisions. This isn't based on black-and-white decisions or pros and cons, but on the Word of the Lord.

Wisdom is Balanced

For giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young. Proverbs 1:4 NIV

The word "prudence" means "caution in practical matters." God's wisdom balances itself between the heavenly and natural realities. We need to use caution when we move forward. But at the same time, we need to not miss those divine, supernatural opportunities.

God wants to give the young (or the less mature) knowledge and discernment. You don't have to wait. The Spirit of wisdom is here now. I'm praying that you would be able to receive far more wisdom than I've ever been able to receive and far faster.

Wisdom Always Increases

Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance. Proverbs 1:5 NIV

Most people stop learning when they leave school. Did you know that? But the fact is that God has designed us to continually learn and increase in our understanding. The ability to hear the Lord is actually the lost art of listening.

Remember, people around you are communicating their needs all the time. God's communicating His needs, too. When you listen with your spirit and increase in God's wisdom, you will begin to reach out to others and obtain wise counsel.

I'm excited for what God is doing in your life right now. Be encouraged, the best is yet to come!

Blessings,

Doug Addison
