We failed, but in the good providence of God apparent failure often
proves a blessing. - Robert E. Lee
You might try and change careers,
jobs, partners, coaches, and even hobbies yet failure, though it might look
different in each of these places, it will still be present in your path more
regularly than it probably needs to be. This is because life and its maker are
committed to helping you develop yourself so you may discover the purpose of
your life and fulfill it, meaning that until you don't learn the lesson
contained within your regular failings you won't move on. You see, a winner
knows how to fail hard and it is this very skill that makes him who he is. They
are not scared of failing and failing big as they understand that when they do,
they are actually growing as they are visiting a place they have not been in
before hence the failure. Yet, as they remain here they also know that they
will eventually come to the end of this space and as they do they will be able
to achieve the "extra" ordinary things others will pay to watch them
do as they took the time to learn the very lessons that were available to them
in this space.
In the Middle of an Opportunity
You see when you find yourself in
a moment of failure you don't find yourself at the end of a result, an outcome,
or an identity. You instead find yourself in the middle of an opportunity, as
failure is the richest most fertile ground known to any man. Many of us find
ourselves in this ground often yet; very few of us ever draw the benefit from
it as we are in hurry to leave it in the name of image and ego. Taking the time
to be still so you can discover what you are being shown and taught will mean
that you will fail forward instead of failing backwards. This is because when
you make the most of this opportunity you progress; whereas when you deny and
attempt to leave it quickly, you actually regress and take a step backwards
further into that place that holds you back from discovering all life has and
wants to give you.
Like with everything it is
important when looking at things to do so from a place of depth and understand
what is really going on which normally is far more than what hits us on the
face. In this case we need to learn to see the ground of failure as a space in
our journey we travel through instead of a place we are stuck in. In other
words there is a beginning and an end to it. Seeing it this way means that we
understand the process and therefore realize that though we are experiencing
failure we are still moving forward instead of being on the side of the road
broken down and stuck. Failure does not mean that you lost your momentum; it
actually means that you are in a place where you have the potential of adding
to it if you take the time to be still, observe, and listen to what is going on
around you.
The Attitude in Our Hearts
Another important dynamic to bear
in mind when we are in this space we call failure is to recognize that our
approach and reaction to it will be the consequence of the attitude in our
hearts. There are two basic ways to approach this space and that is by being
full of expectation or just expectant. The first one is normally powered by a
heart that is full of entitlement, fear, and ego whereas the second one is
filled with hope, faith, and trust. The reaction we normally have when we are
filled with expectation is one that says or thinks, "I don't deserve
this...this is not what I worked so hard for...this is not what I need to happen if
I am going to make it...if they have it so should I...this does not need to be
happening right now for me..." etc. However if you live expectant then your
vocabulary and thoughts will usually be made up of, "today was great I am
glad I had the opportunity to learn this...it's OK it might happen tomorrow...I am
probably not ready yet to experience that...even if that doesn't happen the way I
think it should I will still be fine...". Taking the time to listen to
yourself speak and think when you find yourself here will mean being able to
discover which one of these is part of you and understand what your approach is
fueled by and what you can do about it.
Lessons and Opportunities
Finally it is important to
realize that in life we don't have results or outcomes. We instead have lessons
and opportunities that are presented to us. The way we view these will be very
much what is responsible for what happens to us next time we find ourselves in
this space called failure. I encourage you, as all ordinary people that
achieved something extraordinary do, and that is to keep making failure part of
your journey as this will mean that you are making progress and that there is
forward momentum in your life instead of just a bunch of noise. Those that fail
is because they take risks and push the boundaries of what has been before.
They understand that the biggest risk in life is not talking one and that
failure is usually an allied companion to this kind of journey we all want but
so few of us ever know.
So next time when you fail,
remember that you are being presented with the opportunity that leads you to
