All Believers are to Receive & Demonstrate the Holy Spirit

The promise of the Holy Spirit is for everyone. And its impact is not only for the benefit of the one who receives, but also for those who will be visited by Christ's power through them (Ac.1:8). This began immediately, on the day of Pentecost:

Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself. (Acts 2:38-39).

Throughout the book of Acts we see this as a reality. First, by Peter and John following up Phillip's evangelistic ministry at Samaria (8:14-17). Then, there is the specific mention of Paul (9:17). There is also the account of God leading Peter by open vision to the household of Cornelius (10:30-48). Later, there is the inquiry that Paul made to the Ephesian disciples for that specific purpose (19:1-6). In every incidence, the Holy Spirit was received and attested to by signs following. This was to fulfill what Jesus said concerning His purpose in returning to the Father:

But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. (John16:7-14)

The purpose of the Holy Spirit is an authentic witness of a personal experience with God the Father through faith in Jesus Christ. The Lord made it clear that the presence of the Holy Spirit was to be accompanied by power to represent Him in the same way He represented the Father (Acts1:8; 10:38). This means signs, wonders and miracles which reveal the extent of the Father's love for mankind (Mk.16:17-18). The Church is to be built on more than apostolic and prophetic foundational revelation of who God is, what He is doing, and the grace for carrying it out (Eph.2:19-22). First and foremost, Christ came to build a Church that would be firmly rooted in relationship with an active God personally known and experienced (Mt.16:13-20). Paul put it this way:

My message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:4-5)

The power of the Holy Spirit is necessary for authentic witness of Christ, because experiencing Christ is only possible by way of the Supernatural. Jesus made it abundantly clear to the woman at the well that this was what the Father sent Him to establish:

An hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:23-24)

Later, when we see Jesus emphasizing to the Apostles that "apart from Me, you can do nothing" (John 15:5), they fully realized that what it would mean to function in Him would be a matter of the Holy Spirit. He had previously told them:

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also. In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. (John 14:16-20)

Walking in the Promise, Purpose & Power of the Holy Spirit

Jesus secured all necessary authority in heaven and on earth (Mt.28:18-20). In Heaven, He "ever liveth to make intercession for the saints." (Hebrews.7:25) On earth, that "authority" exists not only to "Go therefore" but also to "make disciples" which means "teaching them to observe all that I commanded you." (19,20) Through Christ, we can walk in all that He has already set in motion. Peter was so assured of this that he made it explicitly clear when writing:

His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. (2 Peter 1:3-4)

As was emphasized in parts 1-3, we must begin by seeking the Lord until we truly find Him. That may take a bit longer than an hour, a day, or even a week. Many today are so overcome by what they've been experiencing in the earth, that the heavenly realm seems not only distant, but surreal, if not completely unreal. If you are out of touch to the degree that you cannot self-initiate in the Spirit (e.g., get full of the Holy Spirit by yourself) you need to begin your season of seeking by asking God how to proceed, even seeking out others to either pray for or over you. It is not a shame to be overcome, but it would be a shame to remain in that condition when God has given us everything necessary to move forward. So if this is you, you may want to come back for what I say next after you have not only tasted, but secured the Spirit's presence in your personal walk.

Having found Jesus, we must ask Him what He desires of us. I must emphasize that asking the Lord what He desires of us is different than asking Him for what we want. Even though we have found Him in order to ask to be used in the Spirit's power beyond what we've known and experienced, we must be ready to receive and follow direction from the Lord for rising up into that reality. And the direction we receive may not seem to match up with our request. That's what I mean by asking Him what He wants. The Apostles first had a revelation of His process, before they received the manifestation of His power (Lk.24:49; Ac.1:8). It can be easy to dismiss what we hear that is being called for when it either seems unrelated to what we are asking or something that won't result in an immediate fulfillment. It can also be tempting to try to go around the Lord for what we are seeking by method, technique or imitation. Either one will cause us to fail, retreating backward and become detached from faith in regard to arriving at our destination.

After agreeing with what is revealed, we then must walk in His process, believing that what the Lord has called for will make the difference, leading to a greater manifestation of Him in power. And if we are truly faithful to the Lord, fully desiring to become all He has designed, this won't be the last time we seek Him to increase in matters of intimacy and power. To grow into all He has for us in being His ambassador of Heaven on earth, we must take the attitude of Paul:

"Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you; however, let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained. Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us."

It is not a matter of achieving a greater anointing, it is a matter of receiving a greater impartation of Christ. It is a dimension that brings The Anointed One to the forefront in daily life, not just in seemingly sanctified moments. To more fully represent Christ is a matter of Him overflowing out to others: pulpit or no pulpit, job or no job, whether the environment is friendly or non-friendly, received by others or rejected. We have a God to love, a Christ to witness of, and a Spirit which has not only been promised, but comes with purpose and power to reveal and release the ongoing ministry of Christ to a truly lost and hurting world.
