Being filled with Holy Spirit is not only a scriptural truth but also an experiential reality. As seen in Scripture, you will know when you have been filled with the Spirit. You will see the effects of this river in your personal life and a new empowerment to…experience the abundant life!

When Jesus was with the Disciples

He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised, of which (He said) you have heard Me speak. For John baptized with water, but not many days from now you shall be baptized with (placed in, introduced into) the Holy Spirit.

In chapter one, I wrote about the word wait in this passage. It is the Greek word perimeno. It means "to stay around, to wait for, and to fellowship with."

The baptism of the Holy Spirit was to be a direct result of relationship through fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said, "If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! He who believes in Me (who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me) as the Scripture has said, from his innermost being shall flow (continuously) springs and rivers of living water."

He was speaking here of the Spirit, whom those who believed (trusted, had faith) in Him were afterward to receive. For the (Holy) Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor).

Jesus knew that we would need both a special boldness and divine "overflow" in order to walk in the manifestation of His promises. The Scriptures teach us that every believer born of the Word and the Spirit automatically has the Holy Spirit within. The Holy Spirit came and took up residence in you at the moment of your salvation. We also see in Scripture that the Holy Spirit's empowerment was, in many cases, a subsequent, deliberate and repeated experience for all believers.

The Empowering of the Spirit

The indwelling ministry of the Holy Spirit is automatic; you did not have to seek His indwelling presence when you first got saved. He came and took up residence in your heart at the moment of your salvation. The empowering of the Spirit is not automatic. It usually comes in response to prayer.

As we learned in chapter one, the Greek word for baptism here is baptizo. It means "to be overwhelmed." The idea is to continue to repeat the same process until an object is fully saturated. It is often illustrated by the picture of a pickle being saturated in dill brine by dipping it over and over again. If an object is completely saturated, it means that it can no longer contain the substance in which it is saturated. It is overflowing out of the saturated object and getting all over everything that it comes in contact with.

In Prophetic Evangelism (click to order), Sean Smith writes, "When we are baptized by Christ in the Holy Spirit, we become 'partakers of the divine nature' at the optimal level." He is not trying to say that we have to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit in order to become partakers of the divine nature. He is emphasizing the point that the divine nature that is already in us is activated to operate at the optimal level in our soul through the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

In essence, the gifts of the Spirit are the manifestation of a believer being diffused throughout their soul with revelation. They are the "distributions of endowments (gifts, extraordinary powers distinguishing certain Christians, due to the power of divine grace operating in their souls by the Holy Spirit)."

Each one is given the manifestation of the (Holy) Spirit (the evidence, the spiritual illumination of the Spirit) for good and profit. To one is given in and through the (Holy) Spirit (the power to speak) a message of wisdom, and to another (the power to express) a word of knowledge and understanding according to the same (Holy) Spirit; To another (wonder-working) faith by the same (Holy) Spirit, to another the extraordinary powers of healing by the one Spirit; To another the working of miracles, to another prophetic insight (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose); to another the ability to discern and distinguish between (the utterances of true) spirits (and false ones), to another various kinds of (unknown) tongues, to another the ability to interpret (such) tongues.

"All these (gifts, achievements, abilities) are inspired and brought to pass by one and the same (Holy) Spirit." "The Holy Spirit introduces a radically different dimension - a power plant that propels us into another realm of effectiveness." Jesus told the disciples "you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you"

On the Day of Pentecost

There came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.

Later, we find Peter and John praying with their companions after sharing a report about being commanded by the chief priests and elders not speak or teach in the name of Jesus.

And when they had prayed, the place in which they were assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they continued to speak the Word of God with freedom and boldness and courage.

They had received power by being filled with the Holy Spirit, diffusing revelation throughout their souls resulting in freedom, boldness, and courage as a result of waiting on the Holy Spirit in fellowship and prayer.

Notice that this passage of Scripture says they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Many scholars say that they had probably returned to the same Upper Room with many of the same disciples to pray where they had waited for the original promise of the Holy Spirit. At the very least, Peter and James, if not all the other apostles, had already been filled with the Spirit on the day of Pentecost. The disciples were all filled with the Holy Spirit again after they had already been filled with the Holy Spirit, indicating that the baptism of the Holy Spirit was never meant to be a one-time experience!

It was meant to be an experience with Holy Spirit that we would repeat over and over again, in relationship resulting in revelation being continually diffused throughout our soul. As a result, this would activate the extraordinary gifts of the Holy Spirit in us, in order to distinguish us as Christians operating with a supernatural grace!
