What has Already Been Set in Motion

I recently issued the teaching, "What has Already Been Set in Motion."  It emphasized that we have been commissioned by the authority of Jesus to: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20

Christ's release of apostolic authority has never been removed from the Church since the day of Pentecost. But it has often been undervalued, neglected, set aside, and even abandoned in several ways and in various places since. Throughout the Church's history, individuals and groups have received renewals of revelation, gifts, and ministries in seasons, only to fail seeing these built on by those coming after them. Although we have seen more continuity of this recovery during the last 100 years, there is much, much more ahead. We need to allow Jesus Christ, The Apostle, to lead His Church (Heb.3:1).

Every person reading this finds themselves in a state of partial restoration, or immobility of function, or complete unawareness of what Jesus has truly called them for. Regardless of any current status, situation faced in our lives, and condition of churches, we must all be upgraded to fulfill our commission. So how can we return to a path of progress into becoming who Jesus promised, doing what He called us to do? Specifically:
  • We are each to seek Jesus until we truly find Him (Jer.29:11-14; Mt.7:7).
  • After finding Christ, we must ask Him what He wants us to do (Jn.6:28).
  • After receiving His direction, we must demonstrate belief in what He said by following it, trusting that what Jesus told us will produce what He wants (Jn.6:29).
This process will need to be repeated throughout our lives, but we do not have to sit on our hands waiting for God to fulfill His will. It's neither required that we lock ourselves away, nor use our own condition as the gauge of our readiness. We're to stay in the mode of seek/find, ask/follow and believe in Christ's process.

The witness of the Spirit, the call of God, the revelation of our gift, and even moving in the spiritual gifts are not enough in themselves to us move into the ministry of Jesus (1Cor.12:11; 14:1). Most (if not all) have been designed to flow in gifts which have never been activated, even if they have already been received. Many have been used in anointings yet to become consistently evident or demonstrated throughout seasons of life. Times when God does something sovereign through us should point us toward what can become more than just a momentarily experience or even sporadic occurrence.

For God to use us more consistently (& increasingly) in power, we must receive greater impartations of His power more frequently. For Jesus to extend Himself through us prophetically, we must receive more significant downloads of His revelation. Paul exhorted us: "sow after the Spirit" (Gal.6:7-9). What puts to death the misdeeds of the body, enabling us to live that abundant life, only happens through the Spirit (Romans 8:13). That is how we will demonstrate being true sons and daughters of God (Romans 8:14). Therefore, we may very well need to, "Sow with a view to righteousness, Reap in accordance with kindness; Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD until He comes to rain righteousness on you" (Hosea10:12).

Our continuing position of progress in what God has for us all comes down to the promise, presence, and power of the Holy Spirit revealing and releasing the person and ministry of Jesus. This movement is for everyone: to authentically witness of Christ in a personally compelling way, with such a transfer of His Presence and Power that darkness flees and the light which radiates God's Glory is seen in the lives of both the one giving and receiving (John 8:12).

What is Yet to Come in Fullness?

Although what Jesus commissioned has already been set in motion, there remains more for us than just aligning ourselves with Him for what is already available. What is already available is wonderful, and we all need Him in this way, without exception. But we also need even more of His Person in presence and power to fully witness of Him (John 14:12-21; Acts1:8). For those who will submit their lives to the dimension that is currently available, there will also be possible a fulfillment of what is yet to come in Christ's promises. This is so the fullness of what Jesus commissioned us for in His authority will be demonstrated and established by the Church throughout the earth (Eph.3:8-12).

The Lord made it clear that when His presence would be everywhere without exception, it would also be in the midst of adverse conditions, worldwide calamities, natural havoc and greater degrees of evil manifesting than ever before (see Mt.24, Lk.21). In the midst of describing these times He prophesied, "this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come" (Matthew 24:14).

Who has not Yet Come in Fullness?

Before going further, we must not misunderstand the implications of a fully-powerful and totally effective Church in the Earth. The full level of Christ's presence and power to preach the Gospel among all people with full results is glorious beyond our experience, but it is not sufficient in itself to warrant the Second Coming. That may sound like a contradiction of Christ's Word above, but there are not only other Words of Christ to be considered, there is also the past that we must certainly learn from.

Throughout Church History, whenever God begins moving (or when conditions seem peaceful & prosperous) postmillennial views of the Second Coming either resurge, and/or the church shifts to a more socially rooted agenda. In fact, a close look at such instances reveals that this mindset usually emerges when leaders of a revival (or churches with an expanding influence) shift from moving in the Spirit with the Gospel to an emphasis on changing society, abandoning the power of God. Without fail: after this shift occurs, that group (& sometimes the greater church as a whole) goes into a serious decline. This adaptation of a more social agenda also happens (regardless of millennial doctrines) with groups which begin in revival, but later become denominations. It has recently taken place with groups formed late in the 20th century, ones which reject the very identity of being a "denomination." Such misguided hyper-confidence, wrong doctrine and loss of Christ's commission authority can be avoided if holding more to the entirety of the New Testament when it addresses the Second Coming.

There are issues surrounding the Second Coming which we have absolutely no say over (even when the Church will be gathering souls & establishing Jesus absolutely everywhere). First, Jesus made it clear that not even He would be choosing the time of His return, stressing to the Apostles:  "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority." (Acts 1:7)  The direct meaning here is that this would take place by the decision and time of the Father.

Since Jesus is not making that decision, God clearly has more conditions for Christ's return than we may have. Previously, Jesus revealed that the turbulent time period described in Matthew 24 would be so pervasively destructive, that "unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short." (Matthew 24:22)  Just by looking at these two revelations, the Lord is describing a time on earth when not only the Church is greater in Him than she ever has been, but that the world is also more on the verge of absolute devastation than ever before. This will also be a time which is out of the control of either Christ or the Church, but it will take place under the sovereignty of the Father. (Mark 13:20)

This must lead us to conclude that what is yet to come in fullness will both arrive and thrive in the midst of such increasing adversity, that we, Christ's own Bride, will need Jesus to return just as much as those who must give their lives to Him will need to before He arrives. We are going to need Jesus more and more, not less and less. That's the reality of the Word of God that we must embrace.

Multitudes need to receive Him. We must come under Christ's authority for this. All creation is crying out for us to come forth as sons and daughters of God (Ro.8:18-23). But to the world and all that is in it, even that points to a greater reality. Creation perceives that its own restoration depends on The One who is coming, who will truly change everything by His arrival. (Acts3:20-21; Rev.21:5)
