"My name is Judy, J. U. D. Y!" I told my new kindergarten teacher while snickering behind my missing front teeth, and so that's what they called me. Nobody ever questioned it - except my parents didn't know.

Besides, at age four, Judy was my favorite name from my mostest special childhood book, "Judy and Jiggers." That book went along everywhere with me -- it was about a cute little girl who lost her dog.

Soon, my first dog was "Jiggers." And in school, I was Judy. Anyway -

Months later, my mom came to pick me up after school. She asked for her little four-year-old, and no one knew whom she was talking about...because Mommy didn't know that I had changed my name, and the school had no idea otherwise. In school, I became a different person with that different name, and it was thirteen years before going back to my real name.

God promised Abram, "I will make your name great!" (Gen. 12:24)

The choice of names was always important. Within the name holds the destiny of that person. It determined how others saw that person - what his capacity and function would be.

Abram's name meant a "father of heights, a lofty father, a high father." Twenty four years after Abram and Lot began their sojourning, the Lord made even stronger covenant with Abram who was then ninety, and his name was changed to "Abraham" (father of nations).

God's Name

The name of God in the Old Testament, that occurs most frequently (6,823 times) is the so-called Tetragram, YHWH. Many Jews view this not as a name, but as an epithet (a title of an aspect of God). YHWH is thought to be an ancient third person singular imperfect of the verb "to be" (meaning, "He is").

Whenever a Rabbi or any Jew read any written name of God, "YHWH", he orally replaced it with "Adonai," not "Yahweh." In those days, no one was allowed to speak the name YHWH out loud with their lips. His NAME was so sacred that it could not be uttered.

His name was the holy sound of breath. When God (Yahweh) made Abram's name "great," He added the same sound of His name (Ha) inside Abram and Sarai's name. The Lord God added the SOUND of His NAME (like the holy breath of creation) to theirs. This is covenant language - the expression of El Elyon, the God Most High who is Yahweh.

Here, Abram (Noble Father) becomes AbraHAm (Father of many).

Sarai (Princess) becomes SarAH (Mother of Nations).

Becoming Little Christs

In conversation, Jewish people called God, HaShem, which is Hebrew for "the Name" (see Lev. 24:11). (Note the HA sound.) Abraham became the progenitor of a royal Kingdom nation.

"To the one who is VICTORIOUS, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it" (Rev. 2:17 NIV).

The Lord gives us His covenant name. He blows His breath within us.

We become "little Christs." The word Christian is derived from the word Christ that means the Anointed One. It's our Christ-like name that changes our concept of who we are - little anointed ones - like Him! Our new identity reveals our legacy. Right now ask the Lord to give you the revelation of what being a Christian really means.

Our new name stands above all names. Incredibly, He gives to those who bear His name, the right to use it when approaching the Father. This interchange exchanges our old identity with His - Christ-ian. Our partner is the Person who opened the heavens.

There's unlimited power in that most precious name. Jesus said that whatever we ask the Father in His NAME, He'll give it to us (Jn. 14-26). In honor of this exchange, we promise to represent Him here on this earth. His name opens the treasuries of heaven for this dying world. You see, there's more to this intimate relationship than a church service once in a while.

Teach us Lord, to respect this privilege of bearing Your awesome name. Lord, we lift up our eyes and give you thanks!
