Mark 3:13-19 "And he went up on the mountain, and called to him those whom he desired; and they came to him. And he appointed twelve, to be with him… "
For three years, the first twelve were able to really know Jesus and to be trained by Him.
Above all, they knew Christ. He knew them. Their lives were ruled with the insatiable desire to serve Him – even through the most discouraging situations.
To this day, true apostles have this same driving passion to know God and to make Him known.
What we often miss is knowing those who are "with us." As apostles, do they stay with us, follow us, or travel with us?
Because they walked with Jesus, the first apostles understood how to release His presence in every situation. That came out of relationship. The miracles that happened were a natural outcome of having lived in His Presence. The miracles were not because the apostles were "important," but because they learned how to usher the Divine presence into situations.
Everything they did came forth from relationship with the LIFE OF GOD.
Together, the apostles pursued the Holy revelation from God to His Church. This revelation continues to establish present truth. Only the fullness of the intimate knowledge of Christ would satisfy.
It is important to notice that being an apostle was not about their "personal ministry." Their mission was to show others HOW TO KNOW HIM – He Who was and is the resurrected Christ. Relationship was their main message!
Jesus expected each of them to come into a personal closeness with Him. At this point, Jesus did not tell them the full extent of their mission. These apostles still had an incomplete grasp of Who Jesus was and why He came to earth.
After all is said and finished, Jesus desired to create relationships.
What Relationship Did!
These early apostles did not "look like" apostles. They were just like everyone else. Some were teenagers. Fishermen. A tax collector. Why is it that many of today's apostles want to look a certain way and will not usually fit the Biblical image of what an Apostle should look like. What is the deal with long black robes and golden chains?
The first apostles were not the boss of some big organization. They were not professional ministers nor were they known for their pomp and circumstance.
They were not concerned with building up their own personal ministries! They were beyond reproach. Many were later hated.
They were outside the known religious system and did not attempt to comply with the existing religion.
They knew the Scriptures and could teach them well.
They did not preach against the Church! With a fierce loyalty, they were totally committed to the CHURCH (observable) and lived to improve the Church and build it because she is the living Bride of Christ.
Jesus bled from His side to establish the CHURCH. It must stand. Not as we know most churches are today, but as a living organism, free from unnecessary rules and regulations. There will be no manipulation and no guilt and sin consciousness.
True apostles will make sure the Church that Jesus died for, survives.
