Creating is Your Calling by David Christian

By David Christian
In Genesis 1:27, it says: So God created humankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. Now, in the original Hebrew, the word "image" is translated from the word (tselem); which is literally a "shadow;" an outline or representation of the original. What most of us take from this is a literal "image" -- or that we look like God. However, I don't think that is what God meant at all. Consider for a moment that God put a piece of Himself in each of us. In the Hebrews vernacular, it is not the appearance of something that they concentrate on, but its function.

Because of this, the text is not implying a "picture" of man or God but their function. So let's reframe this with the literal translation: God created humankind, and He placed a shadow or representation of His own function - goal, purpose, thought, etc. within them. Wow! That's good stuff!

If we back up in our text to Genesis 1:3-26, we see where the goals/purpose of God is as Creator. On eight separate occasions, God created by just speaking - the earth took form, water, fish, animals, plants, trees, day, and night. Now, in our text, we're back to when God created humankind, and placed a shadow/representation within them. The point I'd like to make here is: if God creates by speaking, and His shadow/representation is within us, then we, too, can create just by speaking. Through our words, we can create our future. Through our words, we prophesy what will come to pass.

The question now is: what are you creating? If you say, "I am too old," then you are. Or if you say, "I'm never going to get out of debt," then you never will. Let's be mindful of our words. The last part of Romans 4:17 tells us that, "God calls those things which be not as though they were."  Let that shadow/representation of God within you also begin to "call things as though they are." Start saying in the morning -- every morning -- "today is going to be a great day," then you will begin to see that your day WILL be great. Start prophesying good things into your life. "I am out of debt," "I am successful," "I can do all things because Christ gives me strength" (Philippians 4:13). Mind your words, speak life, speak positivity, and watch your world begin to flourish!
