"And they said among themselves, "Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?"  But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away - for it was very large." (Mark 16:3-4)

These are the words of the women while they were on the way to the tomb where they saw their beloved Lord, Jesus, laid only hours before. They wanted to show Him the honor and devotion He deserved by anointing His body. Unfortunately, a stone was in their way.

"Who will roll the stone away?" They asked.  This was a very good question.  After all, the stone that was sealing Jesus' tomb was at least 2000 pounds. How would a few women, exhausted because of their grief, ever hope to move it? "But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away - for it was very large." (Mark 16:4)

He didn't Need the Stone Moved

As I consider this portion of Scripture I wonder if we too often find the same question on our lips. It's one thing to know that Jesus is alive yet it's another thing to know He can roll our 2000 pound impossibilities away.

I believe this is one reason God sovereignly rolled away. This single act continues to have great effect today. Keep in mind that Jesus didn't need the stone to be rolled away. John 20:19 reveals that He could have walked right through it; "Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, 'Peace be with you.'"

Oh how desperately we need to know that God can roll the stone away in times of great distress.
  • Stones regarding your marriage
  • Stones regarding your job
  • Stones regarding continuing your education
  • Stones regarding your children
  • Stones regarding your health
The stones are real and they are heavy. Nevertheless, there is One who can roll the stone away. He is alive and He is able. Furthermore, "…He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you." (Mark 16:7)

Jesus is Going Before Us to Galilee!

Shew wee! It's a good thing that I am typing because I am so excited to share some revelation on this single portion of Scripture that I would be talking too fast for you to understand me.

Let's take a look and consider what Galilee is and what it means for us today.
  • Galilee is a region largely occupied by heathen. A place largely occupied with uncultured, uncivilized, uncaring, ungodly barbaric people.
Sounds a lot like some regions of the world today.

Sounds like some regions of the neighborhood today.

Sounds like some regions of the household today.

Sounds even like some regions of our own heart today

Nevertheless, Jesus is going there to meet with us. Jesus is not afraid of the various areas of our life. The areas where we don't respond to His Word; areas of fear, worry, greed, and even doubt. In fact, the Word of God declares He is going THERE! He is going to the very place where the need is and there, He will roll the stone away.
  • This spiritual revelation comes from the very meaning of the Hebrew word "Galilee." Galilee comes from the Hebrew root word Galiyl (Strong's #1556). Galiyl means: to roll, to roll away!!!!
First appearance of this word is in Genesis 29:3 where a stone would be rolled away from a well so the sheep could drink!!  "Now all the flocks would be gathered there; and they would roll the stone from the well's mouth, water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place on the well's mouth."

Spiritually speaking, Jesus is meeting us in Galilee, the region of all things heathen, and "there" He will roll the stone away so His precious lambs can drink from the fountain of living water.

Is there a stone preventing you from meeting Him today to receive the drink you so desperately need?  Remember, the first stone was rolled away.  Go ahead, take the leap of faith and meet with Him today in your Galilee and let Him roll your stone away. Amen and Amen.
