Over the years we've watched Brian and Nicole come to experience the promises of God in their own lives. If they would have tried to fight the above crisis (click to read about their journey) in their own strength they would never have witnessed the miraculous healing power of God on behalf of their son, Judah. They didn't have the ability to overcome this impossible situation in the power of their own strength. In the midst of experiencing the promises of God, they had to learn to overcome new obstacles by resting in Him in order to continue to experience the manifestation of His promises.

There are battles we have to overcome to be in the promised land so we can continue to enjoy the fullness of God's promises. Joshua and the Israelites had already overcome the impossible obstacle of crossing the Jordan River. This allowed them to possess their promised land. Then as soon as they got to the promised land, God stopped them and began to prepare their hearts through circumcision for their next battle in Jericho.

You'll have to Fight Battles to Receive God's Promise

Joshua and the Israelites were living in the promised land. They were experiencing the promises of God for themselves, and they still had battles to fight to receive the manifestation of God's promises. They would have to prevail in several impossible battles, starting with the city of Jericho, in order to possess all that God had already given them in the promised land.

"Jericho (a fenced town with high walls) was tightly closed because of the Israelites; no one went out or came in." The walls of Jericho had survived many battles without being penetrated by anyone in its history. Now, if Joshua had gone out in his own strength, he would never have conquered the walled city of Jericho. Joshua had no sooner overcome the impossible obstacle of crossing the Jordan River than he was facing another impossible situation in conquering the city of Jericho.

Why were Joshua and the Israelites still fighting battles once they had possessed the promised land?

Like most of us, Joshua and the Israelites probably thought that possessing the promised land meant they could stop fighting and begin to relax and enjoy the fruits of His promises. After all those years of wandering in the wilderness, dreaming about the opportunity to possess the promised land, Joshua probably never imagined having to continue to overcome battle after battle once in the promised land. God was teaching His people that the fullness of His promises could only be found in Him. He did not want them to see the promised land as an accomplished event without a continued need to be in relationship with Him. He wanted them to continue to be dependent upon Him through relationship. Only in relationship could they experience the revelation that they needed in order to continue to rest in the fullness of His promises.

He is Our Promise

Jesus wants us to recognize that He is our promise! Oftentimes we see the fulfillment of a promise in God as our destination. We can become distracted and stop maintaining a relationship with the source of our promise, the One who is our destination. We forget who we are in Him, revert back to the ways of the flesh and try to accomplish the fullness of His promises in our own strength and abilities, living from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Now, we try to overcome battles based on information we have learned from the Bible, which is not the Word, but is the testimony of the Word! The Bible is not God Himself! This Bible says about itself in John 1:1, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

This is the first step to betraying ourselves, as we are deceived from enjoying a relationship with God Himself that results in revelation. We become content with information, testifying about Him. This doesn't devalue the importance of the Bible. It brings it to life as we receive revelation from Holy Spirit to experience revelation of the information testifying of Him!

Many Christians are trying to overcome impossible battles based on information from their natural senses concerning their circumstances, forgetting who they are in Him. They chart a course of action according to their interpretation of right and wrong based on that information, instead of knowing that they belong in relationship with Him, which would result in revelation from the spiritual realm and be diffused throughout their soul to overcome every obstacle in the natural realm. They become disillusioned in their faith, not being able to experience for themselves the things they believe, as God does not show up as they supposed, and He doesn't do all they thought He was going to do in their circumstances!

Everyday circumstances can beat us up when we try to exercise our authority in Christ through our own strength and abilities. Our words return void as the enemy taunts us with thoughts that the promises of God must not be for us, as we try to speak regurgitated information to a mountain that will not move based upon anything less than revelation (only found in a genuine relationship with Him). Instead of living in the fullness of the promised land, we find ourselves retreating to wander once again in disillusionment, filled with doubt, unbelief, and fear, since only revelation can activate the manifestation of His finished work!
