The Old Man and His Seventy Coins by Steve Porter

By Steve Porter
When John's grandfather passed away, he left him with a heavy burden and a great gift: A bag of valuable gold coins and a sealed envelope with strict instructions not to open it until he was an old man himself. He carefully counted out the seventy gold coins, one meant to spend each year of his life. Vowing to spend them wisely as his grandfather had instructed, he felt confident in his financial strategy. Some years were easier than others, but John was determined to follow his grandfather's wishes.

When John’s grandfather passed away, he left him with a heavy burden and a great gift: A bag of valuable gold coins and a sealed envelope with strict instructions not to open it until he was an old man himself. He carefully counted out the seventy gold coins, one meant to spend each year of his life. Vowing to spend them wisely as his grandfather had instructed, he felt confident in his financial strategy. Some years were easier than others, but John was determined to follow his grandfather's wishes.

As John grew older, he began to understand the importance of his grandfather’s bequest. Each coin represented one year of his life, and the way he spent it would ultimately determine whether his life truly counted in heaven’s eyes. So, on his seventy-fifth birthday, when he finally opened the special letter, he was eager to read its wise words. Inside the letter read just six words: "How did you spend your life?" John, who was now an old man, sat down and thought about it long and hard. He realized that his grandfather had given him much more than just seventy coins; he had actually gifted him with a valuable life lesson.

Thanks to his grandfather’s wisdom, John had learned that it wasn’t the money or the coins that mattered over many years. Instead, he discovered it was how he spent his life and what kind of person he became as a result.

The way we spend our days determines how we ultimately spend our lives. And the way we spend our lives determines how much we invest in our eternity and the eternity of others. Each day is like a precious coin that we can either waste or invest. Once we spend our coins (days), they’re gone forever. When we invest them, we will receive rewards, but what’s even more important is that those investments produce ripples that will truly change the world and determine the destiny of precious souls even after we are gone.

So, what should we do with our lives? The answer is simple, though not easy. We need to focus on the things that matter most, the things that will last forever. Let’s glorify the Lord Jesus Christ in all we do and say, being light and salt in a dark and scary world. Let’s spend our lives in intimate fellowship with Christ, loving others as He loves us, holding onto hope and faith no matter what life throws at us, and building relationships that will stand the test of time. These are the things that matter most because they're eternal. We can't take our possessions with us when we die, but the relationships and memories we’ve built and the people we’ve led to Christ will last forever. So let us focus on what truly counts: being there for one another, building relationships that matter, and living a life that truly makes a difference. Allow His love to shine through you and change lives for His glory. What will you do with your inheritance – what kind of legacy will you leave?

What Will You Do?

Allow His love to shine through you,
O Child of God,
And change lives for His glory.
With your inheritance,
What will you do?
Will you shine His light into the dark places,
And bring hope to the hopeless,
Love to the loveless?
Let His hope flow through you,
O Child of God.
