As spring turns into summer here in middle Tennessee, the rain continues to make an impact.  Yards, fields, and the ground alongside the roadways already saturated by rains for days before now have standing water with no place to go. The rain has saturated to overflowing, and the earth has been adversely affected.

The white fluffy clouds of two days ago now saturated with rain are unusually dark, heavy looking and lie closer to the ground.  Not only appearances change when something is saturated, the action and reaction of things around it are also affected. The ground gets so full of water that there's no place for it to drain off.  Now when you look at the grass, your eyes are automatically drawn to the standing water.  Some fields are so saturated that the crops can be lost. Everything around is feeling the impact of this "Rain Saturation."

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary says the word saturation means; "to satisfy fully and to treat, furnish, or charge with something to the point where no more can be absorbed."  Another definition I like is "to fill completely with something that permeates, or load to capacity."

Another type of saturation we are familiar with is found after a holiday meal like Thanksgiving. Family and friends have eaten more than they should, almost to the point of being "too full to move."  Many were looking for a comfortable place to sit back and take a nice little nap, right?  We can all agree this is called "Turkey SATURATION!"   According to scientists turkey meat contains an amino acid called L-tryptophan, which, when digested is then changed into another chemical called, Serotonin. Serotonin has a tendency to calm us down and help us sleep. So after the meal we are impacted by what is in us. Turkey saturation causes "sleepy time."

There is Saturation with Benefits

Let's talk about a different type of saturation, one that you can NEVER get enough of. This saturation is in the Presence of God and His Word.  I'm sure there are some reading this who'll say, "Oh, I read the Bible every day, and pray before I go to bed every night, I'm good with that."  Yet, during the week that same person can't understand why they struggle with family issues, co-workers on their jobs, or speak harshly to the slow fast-food service provider at lunchtime? My friend it takes more than a "Bless me Jesus, for I have sinned," and reading an emailed devotional to fill you with the power of God and His provisions in your life.  Saturation with our Heavenly Father is a cultivated thing; it doesn't just happen naturally like the nap after a turkey dinner.  You must make an effort to know Him and the value of His Words, written or otherwise. I find the Apostle Paul has such a powerful description of how to do this in Phil 3:10-11 (AMP) "[For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly], and that I may in that same way come to know the power outflowing from His resurrection [which it exerts over believers], And that I may so share His sufferings as to be continually transformed [in spirit into His likeness even] to His death, [in the hope] That if possible I may attain to the [spiritual and moral] resurrection [that lifts me] out from among the dead [even while in the body]."

Another example of this would be 42 years ago when I stood at the altar of matrimony with my wife-to-be Georgina and said, "Now Georgie, I want you to know, I love you, and until I say different that stands."  No, I really don't think that would have worked for us at all. I proclaimed my love for her that day, and I have continued to so every day since.  Not just saying it, but cultivating and nurturing our relationship with words and actions as we learned the unique thoughts, ways, needs and desires of each other.  Relationships aren't always a "cake walk" in real life, we know that.  You must work at it. There is no saturation level in human love, just as there is no saturation level with God or His Word! Oh my friend, I challenge you to fill yourself with so much of Him, His character, and His Word that you feel like you've reached the point of SATURATION! Well, ALMOST, because you can never reach the full saturation point, but He can fill you to overflowing!

David cried out in Psalm 119:11 (NKJV) "Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you" and in Psalm 16:11 (NIV) he proclaims, "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."  22 times within Psalm 119 we find David using adjectives like; meditating, loving, seeking, obeying, keeping, following, choosing, in the proclamation of his saturation with the precepts, the laws, the commands, and character of God. What David is telling us is - the more of Him and His Word we can get into our lives - the more we can saturate ourselves with God's love letter to us, then the closer we come to knowing Him in His fullness, His nature, and the attributes of His love toward us!

Paul, while in Athens was conversing with some philosophers at "the Areopagus", when they said to Paul, "what is this you are talking about?"(Acts 17:28, NIV)  Paul gave them the key to his personal saturation level when he said, "For in him we live and move and have our being". The saturation of God's presence and His Word in our lives brings us to that place of peace and comfort that cannot be found any other way.   1 John 4:4-5 (NIV) says, "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."

What Saturates You?

Over the last 10 years I have found myself filled with the desire to be saturated with the Spirit of God.  Many times in the dark of early morning I am awakened with a scripture, or a song of worship rolling off my lips. I can't wait till our regular time at 6:30 am, I have to get up and go to my secret place because of the wooing of my heavenly Father, and I love it. That, which I have sought after, His presence, is manifesting itself within me. This saturation of His Spirit, His Word and Presence is what sustains me in the hard times, I can't live without it.

No matter what circumstances we may face, or what trials we must endure, the saturation of His Spirit will help us overcome those moments of family issues, crazy co-workers, and even the botched order at the fast food place.  But, I hear you ask, "Well, that is great for you, but how do I get to that place in my life?"  I'm so glad you asked.

One scripture which has become a vital part of my life is found in Col. 3:15 "I let the peace of God rule in my heart and I refuse to worry about anything." Out of Proverbs, (by the way, did you know that Proverbs is the first and most powerful book on Self Help and Motivation ever written) comes this life changing confession. "I will not let the Word of God depart from before my eyes for it is life to me; I have found it and it is health and healing to all my flesh." (Prov. 4:21-22)

These two scriptures come from a set of scripture quotations compiled by Charles Capps, a great man of God who had a real powerful grasp of the scripture, "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God" (Rom 10:37).  In his book, "God's Creative Powers" Charles shares how not just reading the Word, but making a habit of quoting and meditation on the Word is a vital key to victory in our lives. He has taught many (myself included) that by doing this on a daily basis you will develop an understanding and love for what our Heavenly Father has for each of us personally.  Not just the precepts, laws and commands like David meditated on, but the very living truth found in the Gospel of the Jesus Christ.

So what am I saying to you?  Create your own habit of prayer, and meditation. The Word tells us Jesus went early in the morning while it was still dark. (Mark1:35) That is where He gained His strength for the day's events.  If you seek God first in the morning, you will be better able like Jesus, to conquer anything that comes against you during the following hours of the day.

I am personally careful of what I allow to attach itself to me. In other words, what are the things I look at, or listen to? These are very important because what you feed your soul, (which is your mind, will and emotions) these are the things that will affect your life throughout the day.  I used to listen to the "news" from the time I got up in the morning, while on my way to work, on the way home, and even at bedtime.  Now I knew what was happening in the world, but was I victorious?  No, not on a regular basis for sure. I'd watch all the good action movies and always rooted for the "good guys'. But, you can imagine how I handled issues at work or my botched fast food order.  Yes, I loved God and went to church, I even worked for a Mega Church, but I was saturated with "things of this world", not the Spirit of God.  I was not a victorious man, because I hadn't allowed the right things to saturate my spirit.

You Can Be Saturated

Now I guard my spirit, instead of watching "news" or whatever, I listen to the Word (Bible on Mp3) or read the Word, filling my soul, which is my mind, my will, and my emotions, with that which will bring "health and healing to my flesh" (Prov 2:22). There are many free Bible apps which will read the Word to you, some are even dramatic readings. I personally use Bible.is, The Bible App, Olive Tree Bible Study. I suggest you get 2 or 3 of them and load them up on your cell phone, Mp3 player, and computer and make this scripture your motto:  "I will not let the Word of God depart from before my eyes for it is life to me; I have found it and it is health and healing to all my flesh." (Prov. 4:21-22)

Be careful what you watch and listen to on the TV, internet, and movies. The enemy of your soul is out to get you anyway he can. A majority of what is seen in the media today fits the following scripture so well,

Gal 5:19-21 (NKJV) "Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Is what you are watching and listening to Christ like?  Will what you watch on your iPad in your private time be something that will be welcomed in heaven? If not, How can you be saturated with those attributes of the flesh and be victorious?  That which you allow to saturate you will rule you!  Remember this world is not our final place.  Is all that junk in your soul worth eternity? Because NO darkness will enter Heaven!  I'm just saying, have you thought about that?

If you want to be victorious in all things pertaining to life and Godliness (2 Peter 1:3) the Spirit of God will help you, if you do your part.  Start by using this guide over your media. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit" Gal 5:22-25 (NKJV). Are these the attributes you want to allow into your eye and ear gates?  They can be if you allow the Spirit of God to saturate your life.

We can make it through every attack the enemy of our soul throws at us because we can have life and liberty within us.  We can say, "I am saturated, and that saturation impacts my life and the life of others around me." The Spirit of God, whether it is the written Word, or the spoken Word, is life, truth, and hope for your future. I pray you will let Him saturate you to overflowing so that you will affect and impact those around you as a beacon of God's love and hope to others.
