Dream Encounters by Barbie Breathitt

By Barbie Breathitt
In Ephesians 1:17–19, Paul prays that believers may be enlightened in our understanding in order to have the riches of glory and his power manifest in our lives. This means that every believer must be led by the Spirit of wisdom and revelation (a.k.a. the Holy Spirit) to understand the Father's heart. As our relationship with God deepens through experiencing his activity in our lives from day to day, our knowledge and revelation of him and his perspective on the world also grows. When our eyes are opened to the ways God sees things, we can begin to see our destiny and the world around us from his perspective and point of view. Spiritual understanding or enlightenment is different than natural wisdom.

There must be a spiritual presence of God through the Holy Spirit resting upon our five natural senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell for us to experience the Spirit realm. The presence of the Holy Spirit comes to invite us to meet Jesus at salvation. Then he comes in different measures after salvation when we daily call out in desperation to God for an increased presence of his Holy Spirit and power as needs and opportunities in our lives arise.

Spiritual wisdom directs us regarding the future. In contrast, spiritual knowledge causes us to reflect back on past experiences (both triumphs and failures) through the eyes of God. Biblically, we see this principle at work in Daniel 5:1–30, through the life of Daniel. During a drunken feast, King Belshazzar gave orders to bring the holy golden and silver vessels. These sacred vessels had been removed from the temple of God in Jerusalem by his forefather, King Nebuchadnezzar. Belshazzar filled the goblets with wine and gave a toast. His wives, concubines and his nobles proceeded to drink from the sacred cups and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone. Suddenly, the fingers of a magnificent hand appeared, interrupting their vile celebrations. The hand wrote a message on the plaster wall near the lamp stand in the King's banquet hall. All could plainly see the inscription. We can imagine the immediate change in the atmosphere as the hand of God began to execute his written judgment. Belshazzar's eyes were fixed upon every movement of the hand.

As he stood trembling in the presence of one much greater than he, the color in his face drained and his knees began an arrhythmic knocking before they gave way under his weight. His servants scrambled to lift their king from the floor as he summoned the wise men of Babylon, the enchanters, astrologers, and diviners. He said, "Whoever deciphers this writing and can tell me its meaning will be promoted to the third highest ruler in my kingdom. I will clothe them in purple and adorn them with golden chains." None of those the world perceived as wise, who studied the dark arts of incantations and witchcraft could read the clear writing on the palace wall. So King Belshazzar was once again stricken with paralyzing fear, and terror gripped his soul.

Supernatural Insight

The queen entered the banquet hall when she heard the fearful cries of the king and his nobles after the writing appeared. Then she reminded the king of Daniel:

Do not let your thoughts alarm you or your face be pale. There is a man in your kingdom in whom is a spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father, illumination, insight and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods were found in him. And King Nebuchadnezzar, your father, your father the king, appointed him chief of the magicians, conjurers, Chaldeans {and} diviners. {This was} because an extraordinary spirit, knowledge and insight, interpretation of dreams, explanation of enigmas and solving of difficult problems were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Let Daniel now be summoned and he will declare the interpretation (Daniel 5:10–13 NAS).

Daniel was then brought before the King to interpret the message. The Bible says that Daniel was highly educated and was known to have interpreted dreams and their symbols while serving under Belshazzar's [grand]father King Nebuchadnezzar. It states that Daniel's interpretation of the handwriting on the wall was supernatural. He was also skilled in royal protocol and speech before Kings. He honored Belshazzar's kingly position but also delivered great wisdom and counsel as he revealed the reasons behind the writing as well as its meaning in the following interpretation.

O king, the Most High God whom I serve, gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty, greatness, glory and splendor. But when he refused to acknowledge the true God, his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride. As you know your father was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. He was driven away from the people in his kingdom and given the simple mind of an animal. The Most High God is sovereign over all the kingdoms of men and sets over them anyone He desires.

King Belshazzar you were fully aware of all this history, yet you have not humbled yourself before the almighty God. Instead you have set yourself up to bring a challenge and offense against the Lord of heaven. You had the sacred goblets from His temple brought so you and your guests could desecrate them by drinking wine and praising the false gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, of wood and stone which are both deaf and dumb without understanding. You have dishonored the God who holds in His hand your life and all your ways. Therefore He sent the hand to plainly write this inscription.

Although Daniel did literally derive the meaning of each word, he had supernatural insight and revelation, which helped him interpret the vision in the context of God's encoded message. The following words were recorded to have been written on the wall of the king's palace: "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN." Although they are left un-translated in English versions of the Bible, Wikipedia refers to these words as "Aramaic names of measures of currency. According to Wikipedia, Daniel's interpretation was: "MENE (literally a monetary toll), God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; TEKEL (literally a tokenary weight), you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting; PARSIN (literally a division or portion), your kingdom is divided and given to the Persians." The Bible interprets the writing this way: MENE God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; TEKEL You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; PERES Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. After Daniel interpreted the writing, Belshazzar was slain by the invading Darius the Mede who became king. The change of thrones is the "historically verifiable defeat of the Babylonian Empire by Persia." Furthermore this incident is the impetus from which we get the age-old cliché "The writing is on the wall."
