The people of God were crying out for help. The oppression of the Midianites was overwhelming. Though they were experiencing the consequences of turning away from God, He responded with mercy. He felt compassion for the very people who had rejected Him. In answer to their cries, God raised up Gideon (Judges 6).
The story of God calling Gideon is fascinating. Gideon was threshing wheat when the Angel of the Lord came and sat down beside him. He spoke to Gideon, assured him that the Lord was with him, and called him a “mighty warrior.”
Gideon questioned whether God was truly with them. He felt completely inadequate for the task before him, arguing that he was the least in his family and from the weakest tribe. Yet throughout the entire conversation, God remained patient and reassuring. (You can read the full story in Judges 6.)
I don’t know about you, but there are times when I feel my strength failing. I feel too weak to do what God is calling me to do. In those moments, I’m tempted to say, “Lord, could You choose someone better equipped?” I find myself thinking of others who seem more gifted or more capable.
I think it’s safe to say that all of us will face moments when our strength runs low—when we feel tired and weary.
Too tired to keep raising the special needs child God has entrusted to you.
Too tired to reach out again to the friend who feels distant.
Too tired to keep fighting for your marriage.
Too tired to deal with unresolved pain from your past.
Too tired to keep praying for your teen who is wrestling with their faith.
If that’s where you are today, there is hope.
Tucked within Gideon’s story are three powerful principles that bring hope when our strength is fading.
3 Principles of Hope for When You Lack Strength
1. The Lord is with you. (Judges 6:12)
When you feel overwhelmed, the Lord is still with you. His presence has not left you. Sometimes, you simply need to remind your heart that the God of angel armies is fighting for you. He has promised never to leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). He has already won the victory—stand firm in what is already yours.
2. Go in the strength that you have. (Judges 6:14)
When God calls you and you feel depleted, go anyway. His strength is made perfect in your weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Your limitations create space for His power to shine. Countless men and women have stepped forward in weakness, only to discover God working powerfully through them—and He will do the same for you.
3. The Lord is peace. (Judges 6:24)
Gideon built an altar and worshiped, declaring that the Lord is peace. God Himself is your peace. His presence doesn’t bring chaos—it brings calm, wholeness, and rest. When you feel overwhelmed, remind yourself: God is my peace. He surrounds me with His shalom. In Him, I have everything I need. He is enough.
Friend, there will be times when you grow weary. In those moments, will you trust that God is with you? Will you step forward in the strength you have, believing that He Himself is your peace?
He has already secured the victory. You can stand confidently in what He has already won.
