Restoring the Foundations

by Chester and Betsy Kylstra

Restoring the Foundations (RTF) is an integrated approach to healing ministry. This document explains why we need healing, and some of the scriptural basis for the methodologies used in RTF. This document assumes you have a belief in God, and that Jesus died on a cross for our sins.

  Life is Not Perfect

The need for healing comes from problems and issues. Without problems, there would be no need for healing. The first step to healing is realizing the problem. Life is not perfect; no one has ever had an easy life. We all feel pain from what others have done to us, pain from addictions and compulsions, and pain from our own actions. Quite often, we try to simply cover up what has happened and move on, even though the past still haunts us. It is not usually considered that life can be so much better. So the question remains: can we be healed, and if so how much?

The RTF Ministry Process

RTF comprises four main areas of ministry in its integrated approach, meaning each area ties into the other. Ministry generally goes in the order listed, but the order may change at times as the   Holy Spirit directs. There are two types of personal ministry: issue-focused and thorough.

The Law

Laws are put into place to keep civil order and conduct. Where laws do not exist (or are not enforced), corruption and violence flourish. Laws can also keep things fair or correct (the laws of gravity for example). What goes up must come down, just as what we sow, we will also reap. We can either choose God's will for our lives everyday, or not. God wants to share perfection with us, but He allows us to choose. If we are perfect except for one tiny wrong, it separates us completely from God. Since He is and offers perfection, nothing short of perfection can enter His perfection. Fortunately, with Christ we still have a way to be reconciled with God and to become more Christ-like every day.

Unfortunately, legal ties still have precedence in everyone's life which prevent us from becoming more Christ-like. How do we find out what legal ties exist? This is an in-depth process covering multiple areas; though it is surprisingly simple. One of the simplest legal tie to understand is a declaration. The things we speak also apply spiritually, just like when we asked Jesus to be our Savior. When we turned our lives over to the Lordship of Jesus, we belonged to him. But if, for example, we say "I will always fail on the first try" or "No one will ever love me", we create a sort of legal declaration with Satan. We are agreeing with Satan and not with God. It is Satan and his demons who want us to believe those things, as they keep us from God's blessings. Even if we don't consciously believe these things anymore, we still need to break agreement with what was said, or it will continue to have effect in our lives.

Forgiveness is another key legal tie which intertwines in all of Restoring The Foundation's four main ministry areas. Forgiveness can seem impossible at times, but it must be done to break the legal tie and to free both parties. When we are wronged and choose to not forgive, we hold a negative spiritual bond with the person. Two wrongs do not make a right and insisting that their act is unforgivable is wrong; as Christ already died for all sin and will eagerly forgive the person once they ask for it. An agreement with Satan is made when we hold unforgiveness towards anyone (Christ also commanded us to forgive everyone, regardless of the wrong). Once we forgive the party, we break agreement with Satan, and all parties are more equipped to change. Forgiveness of ourselves is also critical even though it may be extremely difficult, if we feel we have "messed up badly."

Sins of the Fathers and Curses (SOFC)

The first main area of ministry covers ancestral sins, word curses, and ungodly soul ties. The sins of our ancestors make it much easier to fall into the same or related sins. If we fall into sin which was reinforced by our ancestors, the hold is stronger than if the influence of our ancestors was not there. Unless sin is confessed and dealt with, it stays throughout the following generations. Ancestral sin is a major legal tie that must be broken for complete freedom.

Word curses are another key legal tie. These consist of specific legal declarations that we have said about ourselves or others, or that others have said about us. Examples are "I can't survive without my daily cup of coffee" or "I'll always have worries." Ungodly soul ties are the final piece to this ministry area. These are ungodly emotional and/or sexual ties. Examples of soul ties include a sexual relationship outside of marriage, or an emotional tie evidenced by, for example, extreme dependence upon another's approval or, to the other extreme, where the mere thought of another person brings up sharp, negative emotions. The integrated approach applies forgiveness in all of these areas, and breaks the associated legal ties.

Ungodly Beliefs (UGBs)

This second ministry area in RTF addresses our beliefs which do not line up with God's truth. For example, people often believe that "the perfect life is one in which there is no conflict." God's Word teaches that until Jesus returns and casts the enemy into the pit of hell, life is not perfect. This was not God's choice for us, but is the result of man's sin. Conflict is a part of life, and a good godly belief to replace this belief could be stated as: "When conflict arises, I can trust God to give me the right attitudes, words, and actions which are appropriate for the situation." Other possible UGB's can include: "Pornography is normal", or "I will never be good enough".

UGB's are often formed from hurts and the belief-expectation cycle. When we repeatedly experience an event that helps form the UGB, we create an expectation that it will happen again. This expectation can in turn create a behavior that makes the expectation more likely to occur. It is essential that any beliefs that do not line up with God's word, be renounced and broken. Once these are dealt with they are replaced with a Godly belief (GB). It is crucial to review these GBs daily for some time after the ministry, as it takes time to renew our minds.

Soul Spirit Hurts (SSHs)

The soul/spirit hurt portion is usually the most memorable part of the ministry. Within this session Jesus communicates with us in a unique, and radical way; often revealing painful and even blocked memories. Our participation in this session begins by asking the Holy Spirit to bring us to a memory that He wants to heal. Often times, we re-experience the memory and identify our negative emotions. We then invite Jesus to come and take us through the memory, with Him in charge. Incredible things happen during this time, helping us to forgive and release the negative emotions to Jesus. Once Jesus is finished in the memory, we will be able to go back to the memory without pain, and with new revelation that Jesus brings.

Demonic Oppression (DO)

Demonic oppression is almost always done last because the legal ground given to the enemy is what results in demonic oppression. Many Christians do not believe in demons, or that they can be saved and yet oppressed by demons at the same time. However, the concept is similar to sinning. A Christian can certainly sin and be a Christian at the same time. If the legal ground is still there even as a Christian, why can't demons be there? Derek Prince once said "Christians can have anything they want to.", implying we can either receive God's blessings or be under oppression from demons.

This last integrated ministry area finalizes a tremendous gain in freedom, closing many open doors to the enemy. There may still be challenges and need for improvement, but we will be drastically changed if we apply God's principles to our lives, and resist future temptations for sin.

Wrapping up

As with any healing ministry, we must walk out our freedom to maintain it and see it grow. However, we will be far better equipped with many valuable tools which will enable us to become more like Christ. RTF is simply a tool that God has given us for freedom. Please prayerfully consider if you should receive the ministry, and perhaps even be trained in it so that God can use you to help bring freedom to others.

Restoring the Foundations' approach to healing is biblically backed and proven. Thousands are impacted by the ministry each year. God wants to heal us and make us whole. If we truly want to receive healing, we will be healed.

Blessings to You!
