What Does it Mean to Meditate? by Jeremy Lopez

By Jeremy Lopez
To all of my dear friends and wonderful ministry partners, I'm so excited to announce the release of my newest book, Meditation: Its Practice and Effects, available now worldwide wherever books are sold.  When I felt the inspiration of the Holy Ghost directing me to write the book, I found myself asking an important question: "Is prayer the same as meditation?" It's a valid question, if you think about it. Chances are when you think of meditation, you envision images of someone chanting, seated in what looks like an uncomfortable position, legs crossed and eyes closed.

Chances are you think of some eastern religious practice. Maybe you even think of something "New Age." Well, believe it or not, religion has done a great disservice by causing sincere believers to miss the benefits of meditation within their lives by causing them to fear the practice of meditation. Whether you've ever realized it or not, the fact of the matter is that you're already meditating all throughout the day - and you always have been.  You can't stop, really. You're always pondering something.

The word "meditate" means, simply, "to mutter." Meditation has absolutely nothing to do with religion and everything to do with a state of mindfulness.  Whether you realize it or not, you're always being mindful of something. You're always having inner conversations with yourself. Whether it's thinking of what to have for dinner or envisioning the new career path or thinking of your significant other, all throughout the day and night, you and I are always being mindful of something. Most of the time, though, we aren't truly mindful of what we're thinking of. All too often, we even seem helpless, where our thoughts are concerned. When was the last time you really took the time to become more mindful of the passing thoughts you have? When was the last time you actually took time to sit back, take a step back from the busy day and just allow yourself to be "still?" Do the scriptures not encourage us to be "still" and know that God is God?

Mind, Will and Emotions

All throughout the day and night, your mind is racing. As you think of the many daily tasks and responsibilities that have yet to be met, you find yourself feeling stress, anxiety, and all sorts of other unpleasant feelings. Why?  Quite simply put, because by divine design, you and I were created to actually feel our thoughts. Do you want to feel better? It may seem like a simple question, at first glance. If so, it's time to master your thought life - spirit, soul, and body. In Meditation: Its Practice and Effects, I take you on a journey through the scriptures, into the words of Jesus. Did you know that in spite of the busy ministry he had, Jesus was always looking for stillness and silence? It's true! How often do the scriptures speak of Jesus going away, alone, to a quiet place, away from the large crowds? You see, the practice of meditation isn't some "New Age" idea or religion. Meditation, simply, means to become more mindfully aware of each and every passing thought.

The realm of the Kingdom of Heaven which Jesus spoke of and taught is, in fact, a very real, very literal inner, internal realm. It's the realm of the mind, the will, and the emotions. Yes; you have a physical, human body; however, you are a powerful, spiritual being. You aren't a physical being here to have a spiritual experience. You are a spiritual being manifesting itself in a physical world. By becoming more aware of your thoughts and by beginning to become more able to sit in the stillness and in the quiet, in spite of a loud and busy world, not only will you realize the Kingdom of Heaven within you to an even greater degree than ever before, but you will become more awakened to the power you have as a co-creator with God. Your thoughts are creating your life. Don't you think it's time to become more aware of those thoughts? My newest book, Meditation: Its Practice and Effectsis now available worldwide.
