Possessing an Overcoming Spirit by Shauna Carrington

Philippians 4:13 (TPT) paraphrasing, "I am trained in the secret of overcoming all things. I find that the strength of Christ's explosive power infuses me to conquer every difficulty." What does it mean to possess an overcoming spirit? According to Philippians 4:13 in the Strong's Concordance it means, "Engaging the Resistance." This refers to the Lord strengthening you and I with combative, confrontative force to achieve all He gives faith for. This is, facing necessary resistance that brings what the Lord defines is success.

What does it mean to possess an overcoming spirit? According to Philippians 4:13 in the Strong's Concordance it means, "Engaging the Resistance." You see, when we make a decision to follow after God, pursing His heart and will for our lives then we must understand that the way He grows us up in our faith is through seasons that require us to lean upon His strength, not ours and yielding our self to His will, not ours and this will stretch us in every way.

I find myself thinking about a great coach, a coach doesn't just allow you to come into the gym and do your own thing. There is a plan and purpose put in place uniquely designed just for you based on the goals you have communicated that you want to achieve. A great coach knows the amount of weight that you need to start out with and then when to add more weight into your training. How can we become stronger without the opportunity to "Engage Resistance?" Don't misunderstand me, I am not one that enjoys everything about these kinds of seasons, in fact, for the first several months I find myself resisting "my coach" so to speak. However, eventually, I must make a final decision, am I going to allow God to grow me, stretch me and allow His word to change me° Or am I going to remain the same?

A Great Leader

When we continue to walk and live by the Spirit then I believe that God will continue to infuse inner strength into His children to overcome obstacles and situations that would normally be out of our control. His strength gives us the ability to be strong, have power; His power enabling us to prevail. Acts 19:20 Amplified says (paraphrasing),"The Word of the Lord grew in power, spread, intensified and prevailed mightily."

One of my favorite quotes reads "A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader/coach takes people where they don't want to go, but ought to be."  What type of leader/coach do you have, or currently are? As for me, I not only want, but I need and desire a leader/coach that sees my potential, my gifts and then begins to pull on those, causing me to stretch beyond anything I ever thought possible. I too want to be this type of leader/coach for others as I am given opportunities to mentor different ones.

Even as I am typing this I am beginning to look at "Possessing An Overcoming Spirit" in a different way, new light is shining on the "why's" that I find myself asking, giving me an understanding that my Father God sees the very gifts, talents and potential that He placed with me and therefore the "why's" are answered. He is pulling on those very things because it's simply time to grow so I can possess a greater capacity, which will enable me to "Engage the Resistance, Possessing an Overcoming Spirit."

Definition: Capacity: The maximum amount that something can contain; the amount that something can produce.
