The DNA of Christ: Living as a New Creation by Patrick Carden

By Patrick Carden
When we hear the phrase "DNA of Christ," it might sound metaphorical, but it captures a profound spiritual truth, that as believers, we carry the essence of Jesus within us. Through His death, resurrection, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we have become partakers of His divine nature. In John 3:3 (NIV), Jesus tells Nicodemus, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." This rebirth is not physical but spiritual. It signifies a transformation where our old sinful nature is replaced with the righteousness of Christ.

Born Again: A Spiritual Rebirth

In John 3:3 (NIV), Jesus tells Nicodemus, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” This rebirth is not physical but spiritual. It signifies a transformation where our old sinful nature is replaced with the righteousness of Christ.

When we accept Jesus as Lord, something extraordinary happens:

  • We are grafted into His family (Romans 8:15-17). We are no longer slaves to sin but heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.

  • We receive His Spirit (Galatians 4:6). The Holy Spirit is the seal of our adoption, the evidence that we are His.

  • We are made new (2 Corinthians 5:17). The old has gone; the new is here.
This spiritual rebirth redefines our identity. Just as physical DNA determines our biological traits, our spiritual DNA—Christ's nature within us—shapes our character and destiny.

The Divine Nature Within Us

The Apostle Peter writes, “Through these, He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires” (2 Peter 1:4 NIV).

To have the DNA of Christ means:

  • We reflect His character. The fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)—becomes evident in our lives.

  • We walk in His power. Just as Jesus healed the sick and forgave sins, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to carry out His works (John 14:12).

  • We share His mission. Christ’s heart beats within us, compelling us to love others, spread the gospel, and serve the world selflessly.
Living Out Our New Identity

Understanding that we carry Christ’s DNA should transform the way we live. Instead of striving to imitate Jesus from the outside, we allow His life to flow through us from within.

Here are practical ways to live as those who possess the DNA of Christ:

  • Abide in Him (John 15:5). Just as a branch draws life from the vine, we draw strength and guidance from Christ through prayer, worship, and studying His Word.

  • Renew Your Mind (Romans 12:2). Let God’s truth redefine how you see yourself and others.

  • Embrace Your Identity (Ephesians 2:10). You are God’s masterpiece, created to do good works. Don’t let doubt or fear diminish your calling.
An Eternal Legacy

The DNA of Christ isn’t just a theological concept; it’s an invitation to live a transformed life. It’s the assurance that no matter how imperfect we are, His Spirit is constantly at work within us, shaping us into His likeness.

As we grow in faith, the evidence of Christ’s DNA in us becomes undeniable. We shine as His ambassadors, carrying His love, grace, and truth to a world desperate for hope.

Let this reality inspire and empower you today: you carry the very life of Christ within you. Embrace it. Live it. Let His nature transform you from the inside out.
