Revisiting Spiritual Markers by Patrick Carden

Life is a journey, filled with moments that shape us, challenge us, and remind us of God's presence. Along this path, we experience profound encounters with grace—times when we clearly see God's hand at work, receive divine direction, or undergo deep personal transformation. These moments are what we call spiritual markers—signposts that remind us of where we've been and how far we've come in our faith journey.

Life is a journey, filled with moments that shape us, challenge us, and remind us of God’s presence. Along this path, we experience profound encounters with grace—times when we clearly see God’s hand at work, receive divine direction, or undergo deep personal transformation. These moments are what we call spiritual markers—signposts that remind us of where we’ve been and how far we’ve come in our faith journey.

Just as physical landmarks help travelers navigate unfamiliar terrain, spiritual markers serve as reminders of God’s faithfulness in our past. But they are not just memories; they are essential touchpoints we should revisit to gain strength, wisdom, and renewed faith for the road ahead.

What are Spiritual Markers?

Spiritual markers are moments in our lives where God’s presence, guidance, or transformation was undeniable. These can be:

  • A major life decision directed by prayer

  • A time of struggle where God provided comfort and breakthrough

  • A calling or purpose revealed through divine inspiration

  • An answered prayer that strengthened our faith

  • A Scripture or song that deeply impacted us at a pivotal moment

  • A retreat, mission trip, or church experience that changed our perspective
These markers remind us of who God is, who we are in Him, and how He has been faithful through different seasons of our lives.

Biblical Examples of Spiritual Markers

Throughout Scripture, we see the importance of remembering and revisiting spiritual milestones.

The Stones of Remembrance (Joshua 4:1-7)

When the Israelites crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land, God instructed them to take twelve stones from the river and set them up as a memorial. These stones were to serve as a reminder for future generations of how God had led them safely through.

Jacob’s Encounter with God (Genesis 28:10-22)

After experiencing a vision of a heavenly staircase, Jacob set up a stone as a pillar and named the place Bethel, meaning “House of God.” This marked the moment he recognized God’s presence and made a covenant with Him.

The Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:19-20)

Jesus established communion as a way for His followers to continually remember His sacrifice. “Do this in remembrance of Me” is a call to revisit the spiritual marker of the cross and the grace we receive through it.

In each case, God’s people were instructed to remember and revisit—not just for nostalgia but to renew their faith for the future.

Why We Must Revisit Our Spiritual Markers

  • To strengthen our faith in difficult times
When we face trials, looking back at how God has worked in our past gives us hope for the present. If He was faithful then, He will be faithful now.

  • To realign with God’s purpose
Over time, life’s distractions and struggles can cause us to drift. Revisiting our spiritual markers helps us refocus on God’s calling and remember why we started our journey with Him.

  • To keep gratitude alive
It’s easy to forget the prayers God has answered and the ways He has provided. Reflecting on past spiritual milestones cultivates a heart of thankfulness.

  • To encourage others
Sharing our spiritual markers with others can inspire them to trust God in their own journeys. Just as the Israelites told their children about the stones of remembrance, we can use our experiences to encourage those around us.

How to Revisit Our Spiritual Markers

Journal Your Journey – Keep a record of key moments when God moved in your life. Go back and read them regularly.

Revisit Special Places – If possible, return to locations where you encountered God in a significant way (e.g., a retreat center, a church, a meaningful prayer spot).

Reflect on Scripture and Songs – If a particular Bible verse or song was meaningful at a spiritual marker in your life, revisit it and meditate on its truth again.

Share Your Testimony – Telling others about what God has done strengthens your faith and theirs.

Celebrate Anniversaries of Faith Milestones – Just as we celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, take time to remember key moments in your spiritual journey.

Moving Forward with Confidence

God gives us spiritual markers not only as reminders of the past but as encouragement for the future. When we revisit them, we don’t just remember what God did—we renew our trust in what He is still doing. By looking back with gratitude, we move forward with confidence, knowing that the same God who was with us before will continue to lead us ahead.

What are the spiritual markers in your life? Perhaps it’s time to revisit them and be reminded once again of God’s faithfulness.
