The Gift That Sees Beyond by Dr. Tiffany Watkins

Ever walked into a room and felt the atmosphere change or feel a charged atmosphere? This sensation often stems from subtle cues like body language, tone of voice, or even unspoken emotions in the room. Such moments highlight how humans are attuned to nonverbal signals, shaping our perception of social dynamics and interpersonal interactions. In the Bible, this is also referred to as discernment.

Discernment is one of the greatest gifts given to us by God, and it is imperative that Christians continue to sharpen this gift. We are able to discern truth, identify intentions, and navigate complex situations with wisdom through the use of discernment.

It was Peter Drucker, one of the most well-known and influential thinkers and writers on management theory and practice, who once said, "The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said." In essence, Drucker was stating you may misunderstand people if you only listen with words.  Because most people do not express exactly what they think or feel, the best communicators listen to what is being said with their ears, eyes, intuition, and silence.  It is the unsaid that tells you what the people really want you to know; the words tell you what they want you to know.

It says in Hebrews 5:14, "But strong meat belongs to those who have reached full age, even those whose senses have been exercised to discern both good and evil." Just like physical senses improve with exercise, spiritual discernment improves with practice, obedience, and experience.  By cultivating this gift through prayer, reflection, and studying God's Word, Christians can better discern right from wrong, avoid deception, and make decisions that align with their faith and values in a world full of distractions.

In order to sharpen our gift of discernment today, we must recognize that understanding does not occur automatically. The development of spiritual insights requires training.  This involves actively seeking wisdom, practicing patience, and being open to the Holy Spirit's guidance. God also provides subtle cues in nature and in the surrounding environment. There are many ways in which this happens, including seeing repeated patterns in the earth or having the same dreams repeatedly, running into someone you haven't seen in a while several times within a month, hearing a name several times, and so on.

Discernment helps us recognize subtle truths, resist temptations, and navigate complex situations with clarity. By committing to this process, believers can grow in spiritual maturity and live with purpose, integrity, and a deeper connection to God's will.
